Difference between History Journal book review verses a New York Times book review?
Basically, What are the most distinguishing differences between the History Journal book view (like those reviews that make for history related topic book) and those reviews in the New York Times.
Audience. A Journal is written for students and professors who are studying history as an academic pursuit. The New York Times writes for a general audience, perhaps a slightly savvier audience than most news papers, but they certainly don't expect the reader to have or obtain a degree in history. That being said there could be finer differences if you were to compare 2 such reviews.

New york times book review house style?
I am a Journalism student and I am required to write a book review in the style which would be attributed to the NY times. I am Irish and have never even seen a copy of the NY times let alone read, and can only find two reviews on the net. so far I think start with a years, making obscure comparisons and not necessarily mentioning the book right away are attributes of a new york times review.
Can someone in the know please help me by telling me what other characteristics can be commonly found in a book review in this particular publishment. It would really help me as I have to aim for a distinction. thank you!
It is not "here is a plot synopsis". It discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the book. If the author has other books, this is placed in the context of his other writing. Often, reviews are done by other authors, sometimes ones with strong, negative opinions. My favorite reviews have been ones which rip into the book, the author, his morals, and call his dog bad names. Alas, these only appear about once per month. Genre reviews (mystery, detective fiction, sci fi) tend to be brief, more plot oriented. There is a section for brief reviews of books being re-issued in paperback. Usually kept to two paragraphs of quotes from the original review. Most reviews, not done by known authors, take a stand. "This book is a good beginning for a new author." "Characterization is a mess." "The puns and broken similies are annoying as heck." So after giving high and low lights, give a verdict on the book as a whole.
